This artwork is part 4/5 in my sustained investigation (SI,) "How much of ourselves do we lose as we attempt to please others?"
Work 4, "Changes," focuses on the time of healing and self reflection after trauma and the lowest of lows, a rebuilding of character, and rebirth as a person. The imagery of a chrysalis and collaged monarch wings in the background drive home the message of change and imply an underlying theme of metaphorical "migration" from the past to a new, fresh present. The cacti are meant to symbolize the ever looming external pressures that are still present, however, the girl is unbothered by anything outside of her chrysalis, showing growth in character of the main figure especially in comparison to the previous two artworks in the series, 2 and 3.
